If you’re suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or any other lung disease, using a nebulizer will help you greatly.
A nebulizer is a small machine that helps to turn the medicine into a mist form so that you can easily inhale it through the mouth. It’s effective when you want to inhale a large dose of medication or if you’re having trouble while using the inhaler.
The nebulizer comes with a nebulizer cup and a source for compressed air. When the air flows through the nebulizer, it changes the medicine into the mist form that reaches better to the small airways.
To make your medication more effective, let’s see how to use a nebulizer with basic steps;
- Wash your Hands:
Wash your hands properly with soap and water to keep your nebulizer germs-free.
- Check Medication:
Before taking medicine, check the expiration date. Also, check whether the seal is damaged or not. Once these checks are done, take the exact measurements of the medications.
- Gather all the equipment:
The nebulizer consists of a nebulizer cup, air compressor, mask or mouthpiece, and compressor tubing. Connect the compressor tubing to both the air compressor and nebulizer cup. Connect the mask or mouthpiece to the top portion of the nebulizer cup. To test the nebulizer, turn ON the compressor and check light mist spray is coming out, and then turn it OFF. If it’s not misting, then check all the connections.
- Pour Medication Properly:
Remove the top part of the nebulizer cup and pour the correct dose of medication into the bottom part of the nebulizer cup. Close the cup tightly to avoid spills.
- Sit Back and Relax:
To use the nebulizer, sit back in a relaxed position. Put the mask or mouthpiece over your nose and mouth. Make sure it fits snugly, and no gaps will be there around the cheeks or nose to escape medicine. Now, place your lips firmly around it so that medicine will go directly into the lungs. Turn ON and hold the nebulizer for up to 10-15 minutes and ensure slow breathing. Once the medicine is gone, check no mist is appearing, then turn it OFF.
- Cleaning a Nebulizer:
Cleaning a nebulizer is very important because harmful bacteria may grow inside it. To use it again, wash all the parts with soap and warm water and dry it with a towel. Make sure to store it in a dust-free, clean place, and check the filter every week…
Types of Nebulizer
According to the functional principle, there are three types of nebulizers,
- Ultrasonic nebulizer
Commonly used in hospitals and comes with an aerosol through high-frequency vibrations.
- Jet nebulizer
Most common because aerosol comes with compressed gas.
- Mesh nebulizer
Effective and expensive, as it allows liquid to pass through tiny holes making it more effective.
Before using a nebulizer, ask your health care advisor. It’s also helpful when you want to take multiple medicines simultaneously.
Typically, nebulizers are powered by electricity or battery, are easy to use, portable, and can deliver the medication to the body within 5 to 10 minutes.
At MediHouse, we have a range of Nebulizers of high quality and durability.
